kahuna, the US is almost as socialist as Britain unfortunately (we have welfare, Medicaid, Medicare, Social Security, food stamps etc), and we do care for people, the US gives far and away the most in charitable giving as a % of GDP than any other country in the world. Charity Aid Foundation said in 2006 that US gave 1.7% of GDP in philanthropic giving, Britain .73%, and France .14%. Britain’s the only one kind of close at less than half of the US giving rate.
